On 3 October 2024, the Regional Programme Manager of the HF15 Regional Action “Enhancing co-operation in the Western Balkans in managing violent extremism in prisons and preventing further radicalisation after release” Predrag Šofranac met the main beneficiaries of the regional action in North Macedonia – Aleksandar Pandov, Head of the Directorate for Execution of Sanctions and Pavle Trajanov, National Coordinator at the National Committee for the Prevention of Violent Extremism and Combating Terrorism. At the meetings, all partners emphasised the good cooperation between the regional action and the beneficiaries, expressing their mutual satisfaction with the results achieved so far stemming from the implementation of regional action activities. Discussions focused on the implementation of current and future activities within the framework of the regional project, emphasising the need for “whole of society” approach in tackling the issues related to rehabilitation and reintegration of violent extremist prisoners, where effective and efficient cooperation among all relevant domestic actors in the area is of fundamental importance. Special attention was paid to the on-going process of piloting the tools and rehabilitation programmes specifically designed for work with this category of prisoners within the three prison establishments in North Macedonia. The participants reaffirmed their commitment to making prisons safe from radical ideologies and the importance of offering rehabilitation programmes to prisoners as a chance to rebuild their lives and make a positive contribution to their home communities. The Coordination meetings were organized under the auspices of the North Macedonia-specific component of the regional action "Enhancing the co-operation in the Western Balkans in managing violent extremism in prisons and preventing further radicalization after release", carried out within the framework of the joint programme of the European Union and the Council of Europe "Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye", co-financed by the EU and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
